General Program Information

  • Q1: What is the BICT program at GCIT?
  • A: The Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology (BICT) is a 4-year part-time degree program designed specifically for working IT professionals. It provides a broad education in web and mobile development, networking, AI, and cybersecurity, tailored for career advancement.

  • Q2: Who is this program designed for?
  • A: The program is intended for working professionals in the IT field who want to upgrade their skills, earn a degree, and access more advanced career opportunities while continuing to work.

  • Q3: Can I study on a part-time basis?
  • A: Yes. This program is offered on a part-time basis, designed specifically for working professionals. It follows a blended learning approach, combining online content with occasional in-person sessions (e.g. tutorials, labs, or assessments).


Eligibility and Admissions

  • Q4: What are the minimum admission requirements?
  • A: Applicants must:
  • i. Be a Bhutanese citizen,
  • ii. Hold a Diploma in IT or equivalent,
  • iii. Have at least 2 years of relevant full-time work experience,
  • iv. Be currently employed,
  • v. Be at least 21 years old.

  • Q5: Can I still apply if I don’t have a Diploma in IT?
  • A: Currently, only applicants who hold a Diploma in IT or equivalent qualification are eligible for admission. Applicants without the specified qualifications will not be considered at this stage, even if they have relevant work experience or certifications.

  • Q6: How is the admission process conducted?
  • A: All applications are reviewed individually. Applicants are required to take a Computational Thinking Test (CTT), and only those who are shortlisted based on their CTT performance will be invited to attend an interview. Admission is competitive and subject to seat availability.

  • Q7: Can I reapply if I am not selected in the current intake?
  • A: Yes, applicants are welcome to reapply in subsequent intakes. Eligibility requirements may be revised over time, and applicants who gain additional qualifications or work experience may have a stronger chance in future applications.

  • Q8: Can international applicants apply?
  • A: No, currently only Bhutanese citizens are eligible to apply.

  • Q9: I have more than 4 years of full-time working experience but I am not currently employed – can I apply?
  • A: At this stage, applicants must be currently employed to be eligible for the programme. While prior work experience is important, current employment ensures that applicants are able to apply their learning in a real-world context, which is a key aspect of our work-learn model. You may consider applying in a future intake once you have resumed full-time employment.

  • Q10: Is it really necessary to complete 2 years of employment from the date of being employed?
  • A: Yes, applicants must have completed a minimum of 2 years of full-time employment by the time of application. This is a mandatory eligibility requirement.

  • iv. Year 4: AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, and a capstone project.

  • Q13: Will I receive any professional certifications?
  • A: Yes, the program includes opportunities to earn industry-recognized certifications in specialized areas.

  • Q14: Is the program delivered fully offline?
  • A: No. It is delivered in a blended learning mode — a mix of online and in-person classes to suit the needs of working professionals.

  • Q15: Will the offline classes be at RUB or GCIT campus?
  • A: Apart from the more technical modules that require access to PCs or specialised hardware/software on campus, face-to-face sessions will be conducted at the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) premises in Motithang.


Time Commitment and Schedule

  • Q16: What is the weekly schedule like?
  • A: In Semester 1, students attend classes:
  • i. On weekdays from 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM (3 modules, 9 hours/week),
  • ii. Over 15 weeks, totaling 135 instructional hours.

  • Q17: How long do I have to complete the program?
  • A: The program must be completed in a minimum of 4 years and a maximum of 6 years.

Fees and Payments

  • A: Tuition fees vary based on the number of credit units (cu) taken per semester and are payable annually in four instalments. Fees increase by 2% each year.

  • Q21: Can I pay the tuition fees in full for the year?
  • A: Yes. Students have the option to pay either in instalments or for the full academic year upfront.

  • Q22: Are application fees refundable?
  • A: No, application fees are non-refundable.


Withdrawals and Refunds

  • Q23: Can I get a refund if I withdraw?
  • A: Yes, refunds are available based on the number of days from the start of the semester:
  • i. 1–15 days: 70%
  • ii. 16–30 days: 40%
  • iii. 31–45 days: 10%
  • iv. After 46 days: No refund

  • Q24: How do I apply for a refund?
  • A: You must submit a written request with supporting documents to the Dean of Academic Affairs. Refunds are processed within two weeks of approval.

  • Q25: What if I’m on a scholarship?
  • A: Refunds related to scholarships will be made directly to the sponsoring organization.

  • Q26: Will I get a refund if I’m expelled?
  • A: No. Tuition fees are not refundable for students expelled on disciplinary grounds.

  • A: Students have up to 6 years to complete the program, offering flexibility for unexpected circumstances or slower progression.
